We are a team of signpainters, fabricators and graphic designers producing signs and identities for local businesses.

We have in-house fabrication equipment for making custom dimensional signs and projecting (blade) signs. We’re skilled with layout and graphics for print and web. And we like to keep it classy with reverse glass gilding, a traditional technique for creating captivating reflections on windows by applying thin sheets of gold leaf.

Some designers start a job by picking out a font – we get to work by picking up a pencil. Our goal is to produce timeless art for our clients that also serves as effective business signage.

For all inquiries contact Anna [anna@astoriasigns.com] or call 503 481 7049.

We use gold leaf and enamel paint on the reverse side of glass to produce beautiful artwork on windows and doors. Gilded glass is an excellent choice for downtown signage. It creates captivating textures and reflections, even on overcast days.

We know walls – cinderblock, reclaimed barn wood, corrugated metal… we’ve seen it all. We can put your logo on your building or produce artful murals with specialized paints that hold their own in the wet Pacific Northwest.

Client Focus: Carruthers Restaurant

When local restaurateur Jim Defeo opened a new restaurant at 12th and Commercial he turned to Astoria Design Studio to get the job done. The showpiece is a ten-foot dimensional sign that follows the curvature of the building’s rounded corner facade. We also produced gold-leaf gilded glass windows and doors, CNC-carved window screens, slumped-glass wall sconces, logos, food and drink menus, and promotional illustrations.

The logos painted on the windows are framed by carved panels which sit on the edge of the inner sills. We designed the panels to give restaurant patrons a visual separation from the busy sidewalk. We carved the floral pattern on the inside and outside faces with our 3-axis CNC router. The finished carved panels (with gilded details) are installed with a hinge system that allows for easy maintenance and cleaning.

We pulled out all the stops for Carruther’s gilded front doors. They have 23kt gold brightlines, matte gold centers, faux marbling, color blending and mother-of-pearl details. The symmetrical design is repeated on the inside of the doors so patrons see the restaurant logo once more before leaving. Click through the slideshow below to see the finished pencil sketch that was the basis for this design.

Carruthers needed layouts for print and Astoria Design Studio delivered the goods. The table menus for food and drinks have an extremely clean design with carefully selected typefaces. Guests in the lounge can ponder their drink choices with an elegant foil-stamped booklet. And last, but not least, we illustrated a 1930s street scene for a promotional postcard. It’s a purposefully anachronistic hybrid that combines the building’s original architecture and the present-day signage.

Client focus: Astoria Vintage Hardware

We’ve had the pleasure of designing for Vintage Hardware in three (!) of their downtown locations. Most recently we fabricated two 15-foot signs above their Marine Drive doors with a style that compliments their building’s architecture. The CNC cut Dibond aluminum letters have a prismatic paint job that that hints at the industrial treasures that can be found within the store.
